Waterbeds? Who sleeps on waterbeds anymore? Lots of people. And the vast majority of them sleep like babies. How do I know this? I recently spent 250 hours scouring through almost 50 message boards assembling data from at least 1,600 people regarding their opinions of their mattresses.
Yes, it is true that waterbeds don't currently have the buzz that memory foam mattresses and air beds have. But that doesn't mean they don't deserve a serious look. Here are four reasons to have waterbeds on your shopping list.
1. Good comfort
According to my research, an impressive 84% of waterbed owners indicated that their bed is comfortable. This is a better rating than what such popular names as Tempur-pedic and Sleep Number attained, according to the data.
2. Durable
Waterbeds often last for many years. In fact, according to my research, it is common for them to be still going strong after 15 years. This durability is due at least in part to the fact that waterbeds do not prematurely sag or lose support as many other types of mattresses do.
3. Hypoallergenic
A bed that is hypoallergenic is made of materials that don't attract dust mites. (The shedded skin and feces of dust mites are possibly the primary cause of asthma, hay fever and other allergies.) The vinyl surface of a waterbed is dust mite resistant.
4. Internal temperature control
A unique feature of waterbeds is that they use an adjustable heater to warm the water in the mattress to create a comfortable sleeping surface. (Sleeping on a waterbed that's not heated can possibly lead to hypothermia).
